Arts and Crafts & Design

Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle (Saale) was founded as a museum of fine and applied arts. The rooms in the south and east wings of Moritzburg Castle were originally built between 1904 and 1913 to present examples of applied art. Today, the holdings are kept in the study collection as a viewable storage facility in the historical domed hall in the south-east tower of Moritzburg Castle and can be viewed during tours. The presented holdings include some important individual items.

Comprising some 8,000 works, the collection provides a unique overview of how the design of receptacles and other objects developed from the Middle Ages to the present day in Europe and Asia. It is the largest collection of its kind in Saxony-Anhalt.

Particularly significant items include the Venetian, Dutch and German glasses, the stoneware from the Rhineland and Central Germany, the French, Dutch and Central German faïence and pewterware, the English and German earthenware, the Meissen, Thuringian and Berlin porcelain and the works by Halle goldsmiths.

At the same time, the collection preserves prominent relics bearing testimony to the history of Halle and Central Germany. The collection has outstanding, internationally rare individual works from many areas.

For more than 50 years, the concept of the collection has focused on modern and contemporary applied art in Germany. This is reflected in its Modernist ceramics, art nouveau glass, contemporary international studio glass and porcelain design.
