Study Collection Arts and Crafts & Design
6,000 works in one gallery! An overflowing cabinet of curiosities, a pantheon of applied arts! – The Study Collection Arts and Crafts & Design includes around 8,000 objects dating from antiquity to the present from Europe, Asia, America and Polynesia, with a number of works and groups of works of international significance. It offers a condensed walk – or an entertaining stroll – through the design of glass and ceramic, faïence and porcelain, and gold work.
In 1911, Max Sauerlandt, the first director of Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle (Saale) wrote that the best introduction to artistic knowledge was to compare “one object with another; the rough with the fine; the merely sturdy with the equally elegant; the gaudily painted with gently tinted”. This is particularly true of modern and contemporary German applied art in the context of international trends.
The study collection hones visitors’ eye for design and their aesthetic judgement, not to mention their awareness of quality in what could be called the 1,001 basic necessities of daily life.
Guided tours
For technical and security reasons, the study collection can only be viewed when booked in advance, in a group of up to 10 people and in the form of a guided tour. It is generally fully accessible. Due to the limited space, it is worth discussing mobility restrictions in advance.
